Ted Hontz: Democrat for Virginia's First

Ted Hontz wants to bring change to Virginia's first congressional district. From commanding a battle ship in the Persian Gulf, to growing a business and fighting for jobs in his community, Ted has the right kind of experience to bring change to Washington.

"Of the two great Democratic candidates, I believe that Ted Hontz is clearly best qualified to win and then lead the first congressional seat.  I've known Ted for many years.  He is a committed and active Democrat and I believe Ted's depth of Naval background and work with the BRAC commission make him well versed on the issues of importance to the first congressional district.  Additionally, the leadership skills this background demands is proof positive that he has the gumption and knowledge to address the most pressing policy issues of the day.

Finally -- from a practical standpoint -- Ted can give this race his undivided attention.

While it is impressive that either half of our Democratic team has more Bronze Stars than all of their team, I hope you join me in supporting Ted Hontz in this great opportunity."

Albert Pollard
Democratic Candidate For Virginia State Senate

"Whoever talked Ted Hontz into running for Congress in Virginia's First District ought to get a medal.  His success in saving jobs at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren during BRAC 2005 bodes well for all the bases and especially all the citizens of the First District if you can get Ted into Congress."

"Ted Hontz has my enthusiastic endorsement for the Democratic nomination for the 1st District Congressional seat.  I have know Ted for more than 10 years.  He and I have been active in the Stafford County Democratic Committee and in issues important to Stafford County.  Ted's careful consideration of issues and reasoned approach to analyzing them were apparent the first time I met him.  I have no doubt that Ted's experience with issues of importance to the First District will make him a great congressman."

"As a retired Rear Admiral who worked for Ted Hontz at BCI, I wholeheartedly endorse him for Congress.  I have known Ted for more than 15 years.  In the Navy, he was in the forefront of developing the technologies of the 21st century, commanded one of our most capable Aegis cruisers in combat and saved his ship after a debilitating mine explosion.  As a businessman he started from a small, two-man systems engineering firm and grew it to a highly respected organization of 55 people.  This firm's growth is a direct result of the energy, professionalism and integrity that Ted brings to any enterprise.  His employees, to a man and woman, look up to Ted with pride and respect.  Ted also has a deep sense of community and has worked tirelessly as a volunteer on many community development programs.  He will make an outstanding Congressman and one that all the people of the 1st Congressional District can look to for leadership and support."

Rear Admiral Raymond M. Walsh, USN (Ret)

"I have spent the last three years in a retirement community, Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, here in Irvington.  However, I was an active member of the Fredericksburg City Democratic Committee for over 40 years, serving as its Chairman from 1975 to 1980.  In all this activity, I came to know Ted Hontz from Stafford County across the river.  He was a good and active Democrat and combines a lifetime of military experience with significant service in the community.  When I knew him he was also active and helpful in veteran's organizations in the Fredericksburg area and was supportive of our veteran's efforts to establish a suitable war memorial for the entire Fredericksburg region.  I urge support of his nomination to carry the Democratic banner in the forthcoming special election."

Press Release

Ted Hontz Running for Congress in Virginia's 1st Congressional District
Common Sense, Competence, Change

(Stafford County, Virginia) - Edward B. "Ted" Hontz, a national defense expert, combat-decorated war veteran, and business and community leader in the Fredericksburg area, announced today that he is running for Congress as a Democrat in Virginia's 1st Congressional District.  The Democratic nominating convention will be held Nov. 10, and a Special Election is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2007.

"America is off course, and it is time to turn this ship around," Hontz said.  "With a lifetime of experience and proven leadership in and out of uniform, I am prepared to tackle the country's difficult challenges with a bipartisan approach and bring real change to Washington."

A former Navy Captain who spent 28 years serving his country, Hontz is currently vice president in charge of Navy operations at Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc., in Dahlgren, where he is an expert in ship combat systems.

A veteran of the Vietnam and the Persian Gulf Wars, he was awarded a Legion of Merit and Bronze Star for Valor under fire while serving as commanding officer of the Aegis Cruiser USS Princeton during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. On Feb. 18, 1991, while 35 miles off the coast of Kuwait, USS Princeton struck a mine and was severely damaged and in danger of sinking.  The performance of Princeton's crew was heroic.  The ship was saved, and there was no loss of life.

With years of leadership experience under pressure, Hontz is uniquely qualified to assess the current state of affairs in Iraq.  "We must change our foreign policy so we can rapidly and responsibly get our troops out of harm's way, while maintaining security in the Middle East," Hontz said.

A tireless advocate for jobs in the community, Hontz is vice chairman of the Stafford County Economic Development Authority and serves on the Board of Directors of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.  He helped found and was the first chair of the Chamber's Military Affairs Council, whose mission is to preserve and expand jobs at all three bases in the Fredericksburg region:  Fort A.P Hill, Dahlgren and Quantico.

Volunteering his time, Hontz successfully lobbied to overturn the Department of Defense's recommendation for a 10 percent cut at the Dahlgren base during the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process, saving 300 jobs.  He also played an integral role in winning support for the University of Mary Washington's upcoming graduate school at Dahlgren and helped pave the way for the recent transfer of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program office and its 300 defense-related jobs from Crystal City to Dahlgren.

Despite frequent moves during his Navy career, Ted and his wife, Jackie, have lived and worked in Virginia for nearly 30 years, including more than a decade in the Hampton Roads area, 16 years in Stafford and King George counties and three years in Northern Virginia.  Hontz knows the concerns of the district and is especially sensitive to the pressures on military families who are making tremendous sacrifices under aggressive deployment schedules.

"The current leadership in Washington has lost sight of the values that make this country great and has squandered America's reputation around the world," Hontz said.  "We need competence and common-sense policies to prevail."

Hontz favors innovative solutions to the district's seemingly intractable problems.  He believes the congested Virginia roads around our nation's capital and in the Hampton Roads area are a national security and homeland defense issue.  As a congressman, he will seek creative solutions to these critical challenges.

Putting principles before partisanship, Hontz is a fiscal conservative who favors a balanced budget and elimination of waste, fraud and abuse.  He strongly supports individual rights and affordable healthcare for all Americans. An advocate of conservation, he believes it is important to protect the environment and preserve quality of life on land and along the district's waterways.

Raised by parents who were teachers, Hontz graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967.  He earned an MBA from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., graduating with Highest Distinction.  He serves on the Board of Directors of the Germanna Community College Foundation.

Hontz served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, where he worked with the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs to support and defend the Aegis program on Capitol Hill.  He later served as commanding officer of the Aegis Training Center in Dahlgren.

After leaving the Navy in 1995, Hontz became an active member of the King George Democrats and subsequently joined the Stafford Democratic Committee.  He and Jackie, both members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary in December 2007.  They have two grown daughters, Jennifer and Gretchen, as well as a son, the late Ted Hontz, Jr.
